The United Nations Convention for the Rights of a Child
Clerkhill School is a Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of schools in the UK.
We are proud to say that Clerkhill has achieved the Bronze: Rights Committed Award, which is the first stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award. To achieve Bronze level, we have a commitment and action plan to embed the values of children’s rights into Clerkhill School. We will have our Silver Accreditation Visit in October and are working towards achieving the Silver award through a variety of activities in school. We will keep you updated on our School website, Social Media and Xpressions messages.
UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens. The Award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.

During our weekly assemblies, pupils will be learning about the Articles of the UNCRC and our P7 Rights Respecting School Ambassadors will be visiting classes to share what we have been learning with all our pupils at Clerkhill School.
We will also be sharing with Parents, Carers and Members of the Community, what we have been learning in school, so you can access this information and talk to children at home about this further.
CLASS CHARTERS
All our Classes have been busy working on their Class Charters.
This has allowed for a lot of positive discussions about the UNCRC Articles and how adults at Clerkhill School will ensure that their rights are upheld.
We have been learning about Fairtrade Fortnight in Assembly and how this links to Article 29 of the UNCRC, Rights of the Child.
Our P7 Rights Respecting School Ambassadors have also been visiting class to share information with pupils and teachers.
Please have a look at the attached PowerPoint slides to learn more.
Article 19 states:
Children have the right to be protected from harm and to be kept safe.
We discussed how we pupils are kept safe in different ways and who pupils could talk to if they ever needed help.
Article 30
This month we have been looking at Article 30. We have a lot of pupils at Clerkhill School who speak a variety of languages and come from many different cultures.
Laura, whose family are from Poland, shared with us some of the customs and traditions from Poland and how she and her family celebrate, which was very interesting to learn about. Thank you, Laura.
UNCRC Article 17
Police Scotland have shared with us some links to sites that parents may find useful connected to Internet Safety. This is something we will be looking at closely as a whole school during the last few weeks of Term 3.
